Some how we totally missed the fathers and sons this year. The first I heard of it was a friend from the ward calling because they were lost and needed directions to the camp! The boys were pretty disappointed that we missed it. Well, I made it up to the boys this week. I took Noah and Ethan out to one of our favorite islands and partied like boys! Saddlebag Island
The greatest toys of all time, sticks and rocks, heavily utilized. We made a fire and cooked snake bread and quickly moved down to the water with the sticks. "fishing for salmon" consisted of throwing sea grass into the water and then dragging it back in with their sticks.
Of course you can't play by the water and not get wet. That's the case for Ethan anyway. It didn't take long for him to venture out into the water deeper than his muck boots. "Dad,Dad, I want to swim!" And he got down to his undies and began to walk out into the water. He got just above his knees and came back out. "Dad, will you throw me in?" How could I say no. We pushed the dingy out in the water a bit so I could get out to where the water was just more than a foot deep and not get my feet wet. I picked him up and tossed him in. "Woohoo! Dad Dad, do it again!" Remember the water is around 50 degrees all year. So we did it again. He loved swimming in the sea. When he was done we went back to the fire and warmed him up and dried his clothes. Video coming soon, if I can edit it a bit.
When it started to get dark(almost 10pm) we headed back to the boat.
We found that the sun was still up. Because we are further north, the sunsets last forever! Noah loves the sunsets here. "WOW Dad look at the beautiful sunset, take my picture!"
The next morning, under blue skies and sunshine, we took the dingy back to the beach. The rocky beaches here provide endless slingshot ammunition. We shot at rocks and trees and the dingy.
Thought we would try for the boat way out in the water. Our little pea shooter didn't have the range.
We took a walk around the east side of the island. We forgot to take off the life jackets, turns out they make pretty good body armor.
We watched the bald eagles, shot the sling shot, picked wild flowers, climbed on the rocks, shot the sling shot, followed the otter trails, shot the slingshot, threw rocks, oh, and we shot the sling shot.
X marks the spot. We saw this in the sky right over the boat at lunch time. We had lunch and naps on the boat then headed back to Anacoretes.
Cheese and crackers while we shot rocks into the water with the slingshot.
Home again and not sure hoe to feel about it.
They were feeling much better after a shower and took their money down to The Store and bought some candy necklaces. Their favorite. I love me boys and am so glad they enjoy these kind of activities. I love that they are able and willing to help and look forward to more trips like this. Did I mention we shot the sling shot?
